Hyphens in Domain Names

Inline Image

There has been a lot of debate as to whether domain names should contain a hyphen or not. Research says that hyphenated domain names are best registered alongside their unhyphenated counterparts.

If you have an unhyphenated domain name that could be hyphenated, there’s no reason not to register the hyphenated version to protect your domain, catch more traffic and boost your search engine rankings.

There are a few things to consider when making your decision:

Benefits:

1. Hyphenated domain names work with targeted key word campaigns
2. If your domain name is long with several words that could be read incorrectly, then hyphens are good for breaking up the words to make it easier to read eg www.hardtoreaddomainname.com is much easier to understand as www.hard-to-read-domain-name.com
3. If the domain name you really want is taken, then a hyphenated domain name is a good second choice

Difficulties:

1. Website addresses without hyphens look more professional
2. It is more difficult to describe a domain aloud when it includes a hyphen
3. If your marketing intention is to create a brand, a remembered domain name, top of mind awareness with the domain then hyphenless domains work best
4. Your potential visitors could forget that you have a hyphen in your domain name
5. Hyphens make your domain name longer. The longer your domain name, the more chance that your website visitor will make an error when typing your name. Generally speaking, shorter is better when it comes to domain names

When registering a domain name, always try to keep your business name and your domain name the same. If you are an established business and your company name is not very domain friendly, try picking a domain name that would make a good subheading or slogan for your site.

Planning a Website

Inline Image

We often meet clients who know they want a website but are unsure of how it can help their business.

A friend, a colleague or their business coach may have told them they need an online presence but that is as much thought that has gone in to working out exactly what they are trying to achieve.

Before setting up a website, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do I need a website?
2. What are my goals for the site?
3. What am I trying to sell or promote?
4. What content do I need – text and images?
5. What budget do I have for the initial build?
6. Do I want to maintain the website myself?
7. What budget do I have for ongoing maintenance?
8. How will I attract visitors to my website?
9. What budget do I have for driving visitors to the website?
10. How will I know that my website is successful?

These days, a website is not the be all and end all for an online presence.  It is a part of your online strategy that includes social media, eNewsletters and more.

"I have employed Naomi & insilico on 2 occasions. The first time was several years ago when I was running my own rental business. At the time I had developed my own web site that was performing poorly. I gave insilico the task of fixing it and greatly improving my web traffic and subsequent business. They performed the task expertly, on time & at a cost below what I had expected.

I again employed the services of Naomi and insilico to set me up with Facebook (both personal & business pages), LinkedIn & Twitter accounts. More importantly, Naomi trained me how to use these social media accounts effectively to substantially increase my networking and real estate business. Their expertise has directly contributed tens of thousands of dollars to my income every year.

Thank you Naomi & your team at insilico.
